Alan Jacobs on Tim Burke

April 13th, 2010 § 0 by A

a quote from Burke: “There are a set of writers who work hard every day trying to create a framework where the only right answers can be some kind of dogma, who will never for one passing second acknowledge the legitimacy of evidence which contradicts their own pet doctrines, who are never even momentarily in any danger of being persuaded by any countervailing viewpoint. For these writers, all online discussion is a colossally elaborate manipulation.”

Edmonton Journal

October 21st, 2008 § 0 by F

On the flip side from my last post, the Edmonton Journal seems to defend the Oilers against their foul-mouthed blogging foe.

Quote:

Perhaps some blog company will come along with $10 million a year for the exclusive rights to live blogging, then the Oilers would look at that. “That’s the business we are in,” Watt says.

Adds Hebert: “Why would we want someone go to another site to catch game updates when we want them to go to Edmonton Oilers.com because it’s going to generate bigger numbers and, in turn, generate money?”

And another:

Watt says he finds it hard to search out the good stuff among all the Oilers blogs.

“You need a pretty big combine to separate the wheat from the chaff.

“There are a lot people out there who are gathered in threesomes in a basement somewhere, and you have to read that for awhile and then skip over it, and you might have to go to two or three more before you get anything that’s any good.”

The problem I have with all this is not that they shut down some foul-mouthed blogger. (Though I will say, MSM can be extremely cruel in what they write: Vancouver’s The Province and Vancouver Sun generally piss on anything within shooting range.) The reason I side with Berry over the Oilers is because Berry’s posts have a much better tone: they’re astonished, not hurt and sulking. All the Oilers have done is display a greed that will kill them and not-so-subtly suggest that bloggers are “a lot of people who are gathered in threesomes.” Um, excuse me? I think that tells us more about Mr Watt’s internet searches if you ask me.

Contrast the two. As Austin just said, ” the blogger’s story shakes out better.”

Edmonton Oilers get a blogger beat-down after censorship – Puck Daddy – NHL – Yahoo Sports

October 21st, 2008 § 0 by F

You may not be a sports fan, but if you enjoy watching the development and growing stature of blogs, take a moment to read this article. In a nutshell a blogger covering the Edmonton Oilers was censored by the hockey team itself, and it’s gotten a fair amount of coverage in that neck of the woods.

As both the journalist and this blog post point out, the Oilers had every right to do what they did. Which actually makes this even more of a crucifixion. (Make sure you also read the original posts that are linked in the “Please read Berry’s rundown…” paragraph.)

And may I just point out that the Vancouver Canucks have gone above and beyond to make friends with bloggers? Take that, Alberta.
