I was thinking of more than plot derivation. Gone With the Wind may have been based on a novel, but it superseded the novel and established a paradigm-breaking way of filming that genre. Same thing goes for The Godfather, The Wizard of Oz, Apocalypse Now, and plenty others.

As for non-adaptive epics, how's about Citizen Kane, Patton, Lawrence of Arabia, Braveheart, and so on.

You know I disagree with you.

I'll limit my complaint to this: there are, in fact, large character arcs through the film. Lady Ashley does not forget about domesticity when she sees Drover—rather, she is overjoyed to see him because he has turned from a selfish and untamed life to her very own domesticity. (This is, I think, pointed out by Drover's just have rescued Nullah—whom he formerly cared nothing about—and his premature return to town.)

And as for epics not being derivative, I'm hard-pressed to think of a single Hollywood epic that is not based on a novel. Is that not derivative?
