Sarah Palin Interview with CBS News Katie Couric – Reactions, Part I

September 25th, 2008 § 1

Now it’s Couric’s turn, and I have to say, I’m just a little disappointed in Palin.

She needs to do better than hoping the Davis scandal isn’t actually a scandal at all. She needs to listen to polls, or at least appeal to more than vague history when making surprising statements about the feelings of average Americans. She should understand that McCain’s past 2 decades in the Senate implicate him in the current crisis, and she should have a ready answer for why it’s not his fault. She should understand that a moratorium on foreclosures doesn’t bail out the “predator lenders,” not at all; it chokes out much-needed liquidity and throws more of them into crisis.

Invoking “The Maverick” nickname to explain away McCain’s past support of deregulation is damaging. It means the only precedent he has set is one of unpredictability. Mavericks aren’t leaders. They’re political vigilantes.

Is anybody here encouraged by her performance? She seemed pretty nervous, and also unable to make basic defenses for some woefully obvious questions. 10 seconds at the Daily Kos could have given you nearly every single issue Couric brought up. I don’t blame Palin. I blame whoever is coaching her.

Sometimes, Governor Palin, it is wise to blink.
